An eloquent rant. (Many thanks “ape”. You’ve made my day)
Ok, you morons —- before trying to get all grammar nazish, open up an etymological dictionary, rather than dropping random nonsense from handbooks written by other morons 50 years ago.
Like the among/amongst and while/whilst distinctions, the difference between toward/towards is purely dialectical, coming from the adjectival versus adverbial genitive of OE and ME. When declension was dropped from English, certain regions of England kept the adjectival forms and others kept the adverbial forms as the common elision of the two.
The first requirement of being pedantic is being correct —- and fully educated on the matter. Reading a “handbook” or “style guide” as if it were an academic reference shows an appalling ignorance wrapped up in arrogant pretensions. Funny how it’s the very folks who embarrass themselves just by opening their mouths and eliminating all doubt who present themselves as masters of English —- I guess it’s part of the pattern middlebrow folks trying to “class climb”.
